What is Lubrication???

Mechanical Component & Management

Chapter 2 : Lubrication

Introduction

Wear is a major cause of material wastage, so any reduction of wear can effect considerable saving. Besides, friction is a principle cause of energy dissipation and considerable savings are possible by improved friction control. Then, Lubrication is the most effective mean of controlling wear and reducing friction.Next, Lubrication as part of tribology, which is the science and technology of friction lubrication and wear.

Lubrication Principle

To reduce friction between any two relatively moving or sliding surfaces  by the interposition  of a lubricant between them. Lubrication is the act of applying lubricants and lubrication substances which are capable of reducing friction between moving mechanical parts.

Type of Lubrication

There are three type of lubrication, first is Fluid or Hydrodynamic Lubrication. Second, Thin Film or Boundary Lubrication. Third, Extreme Pressure Lubrication .

Hydrodynamic
Here a thick film of a lubricating oil is interposed between sliding surfaces to avoid direct metal to metal contact.

Extreme Pressure
In this case machines operate at high pressure and high temperature and speed hence, ordinary lubricants cannot stick to metal surface so additives which are organic compounds containing sulphur chlorine and phosphate.

Type of Lubricants

There are four type of lubricants. Solid Lubricants. Then, Semi-solid lubricants. Besides that, Liquid lubricants. Lastly, Emulsion Lubricants.

Solid Lubcicants

Semi-Solid Lubricants
